Long Lake is great and beautiful! Only overpriced & overcrowded Lake Placid has a better view. It's the heart, and geographic center, of the Adirondacks and Hamilton County and is proud of it, with their mama & baby bear logo. The hamlet lies on a thirteen mile long lake, hence its name. Long Lake is a section of the Raquette River. Like Indian and Tupper Lakes, it was used to handle rafts of logs during the logging days. In the off seasons, barely 1000 folks live there, but in the summer season, it expands to over 20 thousand residents. Float planes fly off the lake to reach remote camps or bring hikers and hunters far into the bush. The town has a free public beach right on NY Route 30 just south of the bridge, across from the Adirondack Hotel. Next to the town public beach are the year-round heated town public restrooms, a rare bird up here. The Northville-Lake Placid Trail goes by the hamlet, as well as many other DEC trails. You can access the Northville-Lake Placid Trail two miles east of the junction of our NY 30 on NY 28N, "The Roosevelt-Marcy Trail" towards Newcomb. There are miles of snowmobile trails on state land plus the lake when it's frozen over. In season, hunting is good and challenging in the mountains and around the lakes. The state and the town both have public campgrounds. Raquette Lake is to the west of Long Lake. Warning, watch out for black bears, don't leave food around or act like they are tame animals! They finally fixed the bridge over the lake so once again Hamilton County is traffic light free! Now, as the hot weather and summer break approaches, the population will swell as tourist and summer folks return for Adirondack peace and quiet.
