The Rest Area on 30 1 Mile South of the 28 JunctionIndian Lake Hamlet Topo Map
North from Speculator, you climb a few really steep hills as you get up to Lewey and Indian Lakes. Indian Lake is very long and our NY 30 skirts its western side for 9 miles with a really good view to the east, but watch for snow drifts now. There are state marked campsites on the downhill, lakeside, of NY 30 that require payment and/or reservations during season. Most of the land on the lake side of the road is not open to camping outside the marked sites. There are miles of snowmobile trails plus you can ride on the lake when it's frozen over, but be careful! The town operates a small downhill ski area off of NY 30 just south of junction NY Route 28. Just south of the junction there is the town ski lift and hill. It is a simple but good little slope. At the junction of NY Route 28, there is a stop sign and you must turn left to keep on NY 30 North. Someone in Northville solemnly told me once that our NY 30 ended there, like there's a locked DEC gate and you have to hike on foot to Long Lake. NY Route 28 crosses through east-west and it's the main street of the hamlet. NY 28 follows the Hudson River west out from the Warrensburg and is good road for rafting and fishing, as well as going to Gore Mountain Ski Area. From Indian Lake west, the route will now be NY Routes 30 & 28 all the way north-west to Blue Mountain Lake. Indian Lake is one of the sources for the Hudson. But the hamlet itself is a mile north of the Lake. Sabael is two miles south of the junction, on NY 30, and is on the west side of Indian Lake, There's a lot of rafting and canoeing in season along the Upper Hudson and the chain of lakes. In their season, hunting and fishing are good and challenging in the mountains and around the lakes. Warning, watch out for black bears, don't leave food around or act like they are tame animals, they can maul you!
Indian Lake has poor phone coverage, usually just phone. The next town with reasonable cell phone service north is Blue Mountain Lake. But the town library has 24/7 free wireless service at the town library on the corner of 28/30 and Pelon Road. If you follow Pelon Road to the end, following the fork to the left, you will come to an awesome swimming hole on the Cedar River. It is very "iron"ic though.
